How does oil pump work?

There are basically two major types of oil pumps; the rotor-type pump and the gear-type pump, and they both work in the same format.

 

In most cases, the oil pumps work in the opposite direction to the crankshaft, camshaft, or the timing belt/chain.

 

Once this happens, the oil pump can rotate at a faster pace, which results in faster distribution of oil whenever the engine's RPM rises.

While this happens, the oil will be forced to move directly to the engine via the pump.

 

Whenever there is an increase in the pressure of oil within the system, the piston of the valve will be forced to work in opposition to the spring, thereby causing the spring to open up.

 

Once this happens, there will be a flow of oil into the crankcase, and this helps to prevent excessive pressure from the oil.

 

While the oil pressure is being checked, the pressure of the spring in the relieve valve plays the role of determining what the highest oil pressure will be.

 

Negative effects resulting from a fault to the pressure relief valve.

Whether in an open or closed position, oil pressure release valves have the potential of failing anytime.

 

Once this happens, there will be obvious damage to both the engine and the oil filter of engine.

 

Here are some ways a faulty pressure relief valves can damage the engine or oil filter

 

1. When the pressure relief valve is damaged in the open position, it can lead to excess oil bleeding.

 

This may also lead to a reduced or zero oil pressure, leading to engine damage.

 

2. On the other hand, a pressure relief valve damaged in the closed position will also lead to disproportionate oil pressure in the engine.

 

Once this is the case, the plugs of the oil galley which are located within the engine block can be blown out. In a situation where the oil galley plugs are blown out, there will be a substantial loss of oil in the engine, leading to a drop in oil pressure.

 

More so, internal components will lose oil for lubrication, and this can lead to overheating and seizure of the internal components.

 

3. Damage to the pressure release valve in a closed position will always result in a serious destruction to the filter of the oil.

 

The high pressure can cause the gasket to cover the oil filter to the engine block to get damaged, resulting in a serious oil leakage, which in turn starves the engine of lubrication.

 

Prevention of failure to the Pressure Relief Valve

Frankly speaking, there isn’t a direct and guaranteed way to avoid the failure of the relief valve. In most cases, failure to the relief valve might be as a result of wear and tear.

 

However, to avoid this, changing the oil regularly when due is very important to avoid varnish accumulation and sludge. Once these two phenomena are prevented, the valve will hardly stick.
