Mill type cylinder is a heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder that has a housing with a barrel welded directly to the end cap. The base with the top of the cylinder and the cylinder tubes are joint together through retaining rings, screws or welding.

Mill type cylinders are designed for the higher pressure of 5000 psi and more. This pressure is higher than tie-rod cylinders, which has a maximum operating pressure of 3000 psi.

What Is Mill Type Cylinder And What Does It Do

The standard bore sizes of mill type cylinders are between 2-inch and 16-inch. The ports are welded to the barrel. The front rod is bolted to the cylinder barrel. This allows the rod seals and the piston rod assembly to be removed for operations.

Mill type cylinders are designed to withstand harsh conditions. They are used in the steel mill, shipbuilding, smelting, heavy cranes, and offshore settings with width temperature swings and harsh environments.

Features of Mill type Cylinder

§ Mill type cylinder is durable, reliable, good for harsh environment, has low maintenance costs, and easy to replace. Some are designed with an extra bearing surface that enables accommodation additional side loads.

§ Mill type cylinder is built to withstand high pressure. The pressure rating is high to meet the industrial standards.

§ The interior is designed with advanced gland design, which keeps it clean for seal longevity and optimum performance.

§ Mill type cylinder is suitable for use in applications with harsh operation conditions due to its robust design.

§ The piston rod operates both outsides and inside the barrel.

§ The surfaces are applied with a coating to avoid wear and corrosion.

Advantages or Functions of Mill Type Cylinder

There are many advantages of mill type cylinder over other types of a hydraulic cylinder.

1. Mill type cylinder has a narrower body compared to tie rod type cylinder. There is a shorter overall length which enables it to fit better into the tight confines of machinery.

2. Mill type cylinders do not suffer from failure as a result of tie rod stretch at long strokes and high pressure.

3. Mill type cylinders can be customized to fit different applications. It is suitable for use in a harsh environment and a wide temperature range.

4. Special features like customs mounts, special ports, and valve manifolds are easily added to the cylinder body to make work easy. Besides, the smooth outer body enables the design of multi-stage telescopic cylinders.

5. This cylinder is used by the heavy-duty industry in oil rigs, cranes, and large off-road vehicles for above-ground mining work.

6. Mill type cylinders dominate the mobile hydraulic equipment market like material handling equipment (such as tele-handles, lift-gates, and forklift trucks) and construction equipment (such as road graders, excavators, and bulldozers).

European manufacturers generally use mill type cylinders in most of their general industrial applications. Mill type cylinder is suitable for different duties. It can be customized to suit the type of work an industry wants to do.

Conclusion

Mill type cylinder is designed for heavy-duty and harsh conditions. This cylinder is suitable for high-pressure work.

Mill type cylinder can be customized to suit to nature of work your company is embarking on, and there is usually no failure due to their long strokes and high pressure.
